Some shoots start slow. Not because anything is wrong, but because some people take time to open up. Russian models especially. The first hour is usually polite, distant, a little stiff. Beautiful to photograph, almost impossible to read.
My afternoon with Darina began exactly like that. She moved well, the light was perfect, but there was still this careful layer of distance between us. Then a wave hit her. A big one. Completely unplanned. She looked at me with this confused, laughing what just happened expression, and something shifted in that exact second. It was like the sea knocked the seriousness right out of her, and suddenly the whole moment felt lighter.

Algunas sesiones empiezan despacio. No porque algo vaya mal, sino porque hay personas que necesitan tiempo para soltarse. Las modelos rusas especialmente. La primera hora suele ser educada, distante, un poco rígida. Hermosas de fotografiar, casi imposibles de leer.
Mi tarde con Darina empezó exactamente así. Se movía bien, la luz era perfecta, pero todavía había esa capa de distancia entre nosotros. Y entonces una ola la golpeó. Una grande. Totalmente inesperada. Me miró con esa expresión de risa confundida de qué acaba de pasar, y algo cambió en ese mismo segundo. Fue como si el mar le hubiera quitado toda la seriedad de encima, y de repente el momento se volvió más ligero.
