A Longboard, a Top That Was Much Too Short and an XXL Bag of Cheesy Snacks

Sara arrived in Mareny Blau with several bikinis and a longboard in the trunk of her boyfriend’s car.

The longboard was not part of the plan. Neither was the closed inmobiliaria where we would later take my favourite photographs of the afternoon.

The top that was much too short, however, was entirely my fault.

Her boyfriend’s longboard

We began near the beach with Sara wearing a blue and white bikini with a matching little skirt. She had long dark hair, black sunglasses and looked like she belonged in the middle of a very good Spanish summer.

Her boyfriend happened to have a longboard in his car, so Sara suggested using it.

Obviously, I agreed.

It soon became clear that the longboard was more his hobby than hers. She tried riding it along the promenade, but the board had its own ideas about where they were going.

Fortunately, Sara was much better at posing with it.

She stood on it, carried it and eventually turned it into a little bench beside the beach. I added a cold San Miguel Radler from my cooler and suddenly we had the complete scene.

Sara in a tiny blue bikini, drinking lemon beer on a longboard with the sea behind her.

The sunlight was strong, her skin was glowing and everything simply worked. The bikini, sunglasses, board and beer made the photographs feel less like a planned shoot and more like we had found Sara halfway through a particularly photogenic afternoon at the beach.

It was beautiful, sunny and relatively innocent.

Things became slightly more questionable later.

The top that was much too short

Years earlier, I had ordered a white tank top with THAT ARNOLD printed across the front.

At some point, I decided it would look better as a crop top, so I cut it shorter.

Before this shoot, I cut it again.

In hindsight, I may have become slightly overenthusiastic with the scissors.

Sara wore what remained of it with black bikini bottoms. It worked considerably better as styling than as practical clothing, but she looked spectacular in it.

Now we only needed a location worthy of this carefully designed outfit.

We chose a closed real estate office.

The inmobiliaria

It was not exactly the glamorous setting most people would choose for sexy photographs. The windows were filled with faded property advertisements, old signs and curtains. It looked as though somebody might return at any moment and try to sell us an apartment.

I loved it.

Sara looked even more striking against such an ordinary little corner of a sleepy Spanish beach town. The contrast made the photographs feel more real and much more interesting than another predictable set beside the water.

I gave her my teal cooler to carry over one shoulder. Then we opened an XXL bag of cheesy cocktail snacks, purely for artistic reasons.

At that point, we had a beautiful girl in black bikini bottoms, a suspiciously short top with my name on it, a beach cooler, an enormous bag of snacks and a closed inmobiliaria.

The top also refused to stay where it was supposed to. At first, Sara kept pulling it down to cover her nipples, but every time she moved or lifted her arms, it slowly crept back up again.

Eventually, she gave up trying to negotiate with my terrible tailoring and simply carried on posing.

Sara leaned against the wall, reached into the bag, ate the snacks and played with the camera. She made the whole ridiculous setup look sexy without pretending that we were creating serious fashion.

Somehow, it worked perfectly.

She understood the joke and committed to it completely. The scene felt confident, playful and spontaneous. The least glamorous location of the afternoon had produced its most memorable photographs.

That top may have failed spectacularly at its one job, but fortunately, my camera didn’t.

Arnold ✌🏼

Oh, and by the way…

There is so much more of this shoot on Patreon.

If you enjoy these little Heatwave Diaries stories, that is where the full archive lives and where I go much deeper into exactly what happened.

Can’t wait to see you in there!
