The Girl Who Didn’t Look Like a Model

A sunrise archive from Playa Sidi Saler, September 2021

The first time I met Mica, I honestly had no idea what the shoot would become.

She had seen photos I had taken with her friend Daniela and wanted something with that same feeling of freedom. So before sunrise, while Valencia was still half asleep, we drove to an empty beach near Playa Sidi Saler.

Within minutes, I realized I had completely underestimated her.

The first light was just starting to appear over the sea when we arrived.

No one around. Empty sand. That quiet little pocket of time before the rest of the world wakes up and starts making noise.

And within minutes, Mica took off her shirt and ran into the water.

No hesitation. No big performance. No dramatic “look at me” moment.

Just freedom.

That was the moment I realized this was not going to be a normal shoot.

When I had checked her Instagram before meeting her, she didn’t really look like a model. Cute, yes. Definitely. But not in that obvious way where you open someone’s profile and immediately think she knows exactly what she’s doing in front of a camera.

But that was the whole point.

She wasn’t moving like someone who had been trained to pose. She was moving like someone who felt good in her own body and didn’t need to turn it into a big thing.

From there, the shoot became exactly the kind of memory I still love years later.

Sunrise, sea, laughter, a topless beach shower, rolling naked in the sand, but mainly just a girl who seemed completely comfortable being herself.

Looking back now, I think this was one of those mornings that quietly shaped what I wanted my photography to feel like.

Not stiff. Not polished to death. Not nudity treated like a scandal.

Just sunlight, trust, a little chaos, and the kind of freedom that is impossible to fake.

I wrote a fuller archive story about this shoot, with a lot more photos from that morning, on Patreon.

But even in the short version, the feeling is still there:

some shoots give you good photos.

This one gave me a glimpse of what I wanted my work to become.
