She didn’t plan this outfit. Neither did I.

I picked up Yami fully convinced we were doing something calm and reasonable. A little hike near the Albufera. Nature. Movement. Shorts. A crop top. You know… normal.

So before we started, I asked her to show me what she’d brought.

She opened her bag.

Bikinis.
More bikinis.
And one bodysuit with “1990” written across it.

I paused and said something like, “Okay but… I was kinda picturing shorts and a crop top.”

She looked at me for half a second and asked, completely serious, if I had scissors in my camera bag.

I did.

She took them, cut the bodysuit straight in half, held it up and said, “Crop top. Check.”

At that exact moment, I stopped having opinions.

Red bikini bottoms. Hiking boots. Forest trail. And suddenly we’re walking through nature like this was always the plan. Even the squirrels were staring like, “This feels illegal.”

And honestly? That’s the lesson.

You can plan outfits, locations, vibes, moods. But the best shoots happen when you work with people who get your energy. Who feel comfortable pushing things a little. Who trust you enough to go off-script.

Even if that script originally involved more fabric.

Especially if it did.

Sometimes the best creative decision is realizing the plan was just a suggestion. 🤭

Oh, and by the way…

These are just a few photos from one of far too many days spent shooting with Yami. At this point I’ve genuinely lost count. Same person, different moods, different light, different “how did we even end up here?” moments. It’s kind of what happens when you stop overplanning and just keep showing up together.

If you’re ever curious about the full stories behind days like this, that’s what I share on Patreon. Not just the photos, but how the moments unfold, the conversations in between, and all the little decisions that never make it to Instagram.

And for the photographers quietly lurking here: if this way of working speaks to you and you feel like something in your own work (or life) could use a small shake-up, I do coaching too. No pressure, no sales pitch. We can just talk, see where you’re at, and figure out what you actually need. Sometimes that’s all it takes.
